Project Title: | Cellular and molecular mechanisms of intestinal transport of water-soluble vitamins during enteric infection: Impact of malnutrition on diarrhea |
Abstract of Project : | |
Diarrheal disease is a major global health problem. Malnutrition increases severity of diarrhea and mortality rate. One mechanism to understand the vicious cycle of diarrhea and malnutrition is to investigate molecular mechanisms of vitamin transport during enteric infections. During my Fulbright tenure, I will conduct a pilot study to investigate the effect of enterotoxigenic E. coli and Salmonella infections on the intestinal transport of thiamin, folate and biotin at the cellular and molecular levels using knock-out and transgenic mice models and cell lines. The results will help in designing effective strategies to handle malnutrition during diarrhea. |
